Owners, Paula and David Conning were living in Orangeville, and after Paula retired from a twenty-five year career in nursing she was looking for something to do. The couple decided that they wanted to buy a business and selected Collingwood as a potential location as it was central to both the Bruce Peninsula and Muskoka communities that the couple has ties to. “We knew we wanted to buy a retail business that suited the needs of the community, was well situated, had a decent inventory to take over, a good supplier network and a strong well established brand,” recalls Paula. “When we did our reconnaissance drive to Collingwood, we found that what Clerkson’s offered as a business ticked all of the boxes on our criteria list”.
Clerkson’s Home Store was originally opened in 1977 by Murray Clerkson and was being offered for sale in 2013 by then current owners Bob and Betty Jean Cook. “When we purchased the store, our job was to literally not mess this up. Clerkson’s had been a good reliable business in the community for over forty years,” remembers Paula “and it was our job to make sure it stayed that way when we took over. It was a very pleasant surprise to find out how supportive and welcoming the local business community was to us, the Christie’s next door have been extremely supportive and helpful and our landlords, Rick and Anke Lex are just fantastic to deal with”. Being new to the community and wanting to really get involved, Dave served as a Board Member with the Collingwood Downtown Business Improvement Area. “We love being where we are in the downtown core. We’re close to fantastic restaurants that are steps away and we’ve attended many performances at the Simcoe Street Theatre. Dave and our daughter Laura have even performed there together”, reflects Paula.
Well known for home décor, in addition to offering quality, well made furniture, Clerkson’s has a large selection of furnishings for every room in the house. “These are the aesthetic components used to make a home more attractive and visually appealing like rugs, bedding, lighting and accessories,” explains Paula. “If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, come on in and talk to us. We’ve got a great team here and your home should make you happy. We can help you explore ideas and help answer questions like ‘how big should the rug be in this space? Or what kind of lighting would work best in this room?’ We also offer home décor consultations, so maybe you have some core pieces and want to refresh the current look and feel of your home or maybe you’re starting from scratch furnishing your dream home or your weekend residence.”
Seasonal Tip: During the holiday season, Clerkson’s offers a wonderful selection of gifts and Christmas ornaments, everything from classic blown glass to whimsical felted ornaments.
