This eagerly anticipated deli in the heart of Collingwood Downtown recently opened its doors in November of 2023 and has been receiving rave reviews with every bite from satisfied customers sinking their teeth into their delicious deli sandwiches.
Partners Jenni Booth, Derek Muscat and Lisa Santos became friends over the past decade though, previous employment, children in the same school and in their kids being involved in local sports together.
Starting a business centered on food and beverage was a natural decision for the team. Jenni, having previously owned and operated a favourite local restaurant, was ready to get back into the business. “Lisa and I had a conversation about partnering up with each other, the goal was to create a business that brought both something new and much needed to the residents and tourists of Collingwood, while creating a lifestyle that worked with our busy families”. Lisa has a strong background in hospitality and retail as well as a focus on nutrition and fitness with more than 20 years of experience in different facets of the industry. Derek, who is naturally charming with a flair for customer service, is a traditional illustrator and graphic designer by trade, continues to enjoy success with his own businesses in the outdoors industry while embarking on this exciting new venture. “I have a lot of experience in marketing, branding and social media, but everything we do is a collaborative effort.” he explains.
Fun fact: The partners had not decided on a name for the business yet when they were doing a walk-through of the building. The sun happened to peek through the window, and they said, ‘hey we’re on the bright side of the street.’ They came up with ‘Brightside Deli’ right there and then and they love the way the brand name is whimsical, catchy and rolls off the tongue.
The space is bright and inviting, offering 30 seats for patrons to enjoy classic deli sandwiches, soups, salads, daily features, and baked goods. All their meats are cooked and prepared in-house and piled high, served on tasty baked bread. Their desserts are delicious, gorgeous, and all created by bakers within the community.
The vibe inside the Brightside is very much that of community and family. They have set up a local marketplace in the front entranceway to help support local artisans. It’s very much a place where you can bring the whole family together and if you do, you’re probably going to run into a few friends while you’re there. “It was important for us to create a space and an environment where we could show our
own kids what community spirit is about, and the Brightside is a perfect example of that. I think we’ve really hit the nail on the head.” says Derek.
